Have you ever had a mullet before? Ever slept with one?
I’ve never slept with a mullet, though I crush on them often enough. I have slept with people with rattails though (male and female)
Have you been to SOS or even Perth before? What did you like about it or what are you looking forward to?
I went to SoS last year, but had fallen in love the week earlier, so spent the week lovesick and unproductive. I’m looking forward to learning more this time. What I did like was the variety of people there, from those who fit the hippy stereotype, to role playing game geeks to Indigenous elders. Being in a place where vegan food is the norm is also really empowering.
Tell us about a form of environmental action that excites you.
I like efforts to live/show others how to live more sustainably, in ways that go beyond what’s currently fashionable. Compact fluorescent lightbulbs aren’t enough when you’re eating meat twice a day. Energy and water-efficient architecture is also really cool. My favourite action would be when two activists sunk half of Iceland’s whaling fleet. They sneaked on board when the ships were in dock and unoccupied, and prised open the salt water intake valve. They weren’t even caught. It’s easy to forget that one or two people alone can achieve the outrageous.
How do you think climate change and other environmental crises will be addressed by people, if at all? How does this affect your actions to protect the environment?
I have a technocratic streak, and hope that even if we don’t get our act together in the next ten years, some scientific advance will save the day at the last possible moment. So I campaign on environmental issues like other, less technocratic activists, because I don’t want to leave it up to chance. I also try to point out that opposition to, say, Monsanto’s use of GMOs isn’t necessarily anti-science, but against industry and military control of the direction of research. The Luddites weren’t scared of science, they were worried about the effect of industrialisation on their livelihoods.
You’re famous now, web blog and everything. Anything else you want to say?
